Associate Director, Cultivation Systems Product Development – Algenol Biotech LLC

Summary of Your Job

As an Associate Director of Process Engineering, you will plan and direct the research activities of an interdisciplinary R&D Project or Sub-Project Team consisting of engineers and biologists with Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. levels of knowledge and experience. The position may also manage the activities of an R&D support department or group. Responsibilities include technical and financial planning of large and often complex research programs and support functions designed to meet company milestones and objectives. The role also includes full supervisory responsibility for staff of multiple levels, including hiring, assigning work, performance reviews, and mentoring/professional development. In this position, you are expected to be proactive, self-disciplined, and capable of working on multiple projects or tasks in an organized and efficient manner to meet ambitious timelines.

Your Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. As with any job, other duties may be assigned to you as appropriate.

  1. Manage the bioreactor product development cycle, including idea generation, design, prototyping, cost-saving measures, and technology scale-up to commercial operation.
  2. Provide technical engineering leadership for Algenol’s photobioreactor cultivation platform development, including continuous improvement and working with manufacturing to ensure these systems are built to high quality.
  3. Collaborate with strain development and aquaculture scientists to screen and advance strains and translate requirements into engineering specifications to optimize cultivation systems at lab, pilot and commercial scales.
  4. Demonstrate strong leadership skills and strategic planning, aligned with Company goals and objectives.
  5. Provide technical leadership of cross-functional Project or Sub-Project Teams and/or R&D support departments that are directed toward achieving operating plan milestones.
  6. Develop and direct the execution of comprehensive research plans designed to address company milestones and objectives.
  7. Represent project and/or support team interests to Executive Management; report research progress, identify risks and resource constraints.
  8. Review and edit experimental proposals, process narratives, and technical reports generated by technical staff in Engineering and other departments or Project Teams.
  9. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced employees in Engineering.
  10. Apply fundamental understanding of engineering principles, particularly strength of materials, structural mechanics, bioreactor engineering, mass balance, and fluid dynamics to review engineering designs for piping, support structure, and bioreactor designs.
  11. Manage the bioreactor product development cycle, including idea generation, design, prototyping, cost-saving measures, and technology scale-up to commercial operation.
  12. Utilize risk analysis and problem solving tools such as FMEA, RCA and HAZOP to design systems and solve process upsets.
  13. Use science, engineering, chemistry, and biotechnology knowledge to propose and conduct experiments, analyze data, and prepare reports.
  14. Use engineering knowledge to improve process development, including new processing strategies, equipment, and draft process flow and piping and instrumentation diagrams.
  15. Respect the confidential nature of the work and use discretion at all times.
  16. Must be able to work flexible hours, including occasional nights and weekends.

Qualifications for Your Job

  1. Experience with product and process design, process modeling, and translation of lab results to commercial scale preferred.
  2. 10+ years relevant scientific or engineering experience (i.e., engineering, algal physiology, algal cultivation or photobioreactor design/operation) in a research or industrial environment (or 5+ with Ph.D.).
  3. Work with photobioreactor systems would be beneficial.
  4. Clear and concise scientific writing, presentation, and communication skills.
  5. Excellent technical, leadership and management skills in field; ability to work in a team environment and interact with all levels of staff and management.
  6. Must have excellent time management skills and the ability to work on multiple projects in an independent, organized, and efficient manner in a fast-paced and demanding work environment.
  7. Experience with 2D and 3D design would be an asset (preferentially in AutoCAD and SolidWorks)
  8. Must be fluent in written and spoken English.
  9. Competency with Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft SharePoint.
  10. Must be eligible to work in the United States.
